2020 foi um ano extremamente desafiador e não foi diferente na indústria dos games. Uma série de jogos que estavam previstos para chegarem ao mercado no ano passado tiveram de ser adiados para 2021, em razão da necessidade de prazos maiores para o desenvolvimento durante a pandemia. Em meio a todas essas dificuldades, Sony e Microsoft realizaram o lançamento dos seus consoles de nova geração.
Apesar de todas as restrições, houveram excelentes lançamentos: 16 jogos pontuaram 90 ou mais no Metacritic no ano passado. Para efeito de comparação, em 2019, apenas 9 games tiveram um Metascore igual ou superior a 90.
Persona 5 Royal foi o jogo que registrou a maior pontuação, sendo seguido por The Last of Us Parte II. Curiosamente, estes dois jogos somente podem ser jogados no PlayStation 4 (ou no PlayStation 5, via retrocompatibilidade). A terceira maior nota do site foi da edição definitiva de Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age no PS4, jogo que também recebeu ótimas notas no Xbox One. Completam o top cinco a versão de Hades para o Switch e Half-Life: Alyx.
