A expansão Endwalker fez Final Fantasy XIV ser considerado, pelo Metacritic, o melhor jogo de PlayStation em 2021. O título da Square Enix superou os games Hades e Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, que aparecem logo na sequência e completam o top três.

Na elaboração da listagem, o Metacritic levou em conta todos os jogos lançados entre 1 de janeiro e 31 de dezembro de 2021. Participaram do levantamento somente os games com ao menos sete avaliações publicadas no site. Se um título tiver sido lançado para PlayStation 4 e PlayStation 5, apenas a versão com a maior quantidade de críticas entrou no ranking. Os games foram classificados, em 2 de janeiro de 2022, pelo Metascore, a média ponderada das pontuações registradas no site, antes do arredondamento.
